Tread Wear Indicator

Tyres are a major part of vehicles which are very important in safety aspect. Some automobile experts say after brakes, tyres are the most important safety feature available in a car. But for the tyre to be safe tyres need to be properly checked and replaced on time. To identify the right time for changing the tyres we will have a look in to the tread wear indicator.

Tread wear indicator in tyres

Normally a car’s new tyre’s tread is 8 mm thick(groove depth is 8mm) and it is safe to use till it reaches it’s 25% tread ,ie 2mm, for measuring this we have an easy way by looking in to the tread wear indicator.

What is tread wear indicator?

New Tyre

It is the small channel between two treads of tyre inside the groove. There will be more than 1 TWI(Tread wear indicator) in a tyre . When the height of TWI and tyre tread becomes a straight line then it is the time to change the tyre

Currently using tyre

To find TWI just look in between the treads of tyre we can see the TWI or look for the TWI indicator arrow on the sides of the tyre. Right above the indicator arrow we can see the TWI.

Below shows the TWI in a worn expired tyre which is having same height as the tread of a tyre. When ever the height of tyre tread and Tread Wear Indicator becomes same, It is the time of change the tyres.
