AMT vs AT

We often hear the words AMT and AT related with cars , but even if it is AT or AMT people say automatic car, but actually both are not same . So lets have a look at what is AMT and what is AT , which is better and which is more economical.

AMT

AMT means Automated Manual Transmission also called as AGS (Auto Gear Shift) , in this system gear box used is the same gear box as used in the manual cars, but the gears need not to be changed by the driver , instead the gears will be changed by an Intelligent Actuating Unit as per the instruction it receives from Transmission control unit.

In AMT type vehicles there will be no clutch pedal , but clutch will be there , clutch is also controlled by the same system , so that the driver need not to bother about changing the gears in AMT vehicles , or about operation of clutch.

AMT technology was first used by Celerio in India , now many of the maruti vehicles comes with AMT technology and also other manufacturers like, TATA, Mahindra, Renault, Hyundai etc.. also uses AMT technology in thier cars

Advantages of AMT-

Advantage of AMT is the driver can easily drive the car in bumper to bumper traffic like an automatic car, AMT can be driven in Manual mode also, there is an option for changing the gear from Manual to Drive and Drive to Auto in AMT cars without stopping or without applying brake pedal, this feature is called as shift on the fly.

As the gear box used in AMT cars are manual gear box , AMT cars have mileage almost same as the manual cars and the maintenance cost will be almost as same as manual cars. One more thing is the price of AMT vehicles is not as much as Automatic vehicles.

Disadvantages of AMT-

As the gear box used in the AMT cars are manual it will have some characteristics of manual cars like when we are driving through hill and in between if we stops the vehicle then at the time of restarting of vehicle we need to operate the vehicle using parking brake for not going back. So the solution is to use the parking brake in this situation. Another disadvantage is the gear shift will not be as smooth as in Automatic transmission as it uses the same mechanism as in manual.

AT

AT means Automatic Transmission , in this type of gear box there will be no clutch instead it uses a torque converter which has two parts , one part is connected to engine and another part is connected gear box. Here gear box is not as same as in manual .Automatic gear box contains planetory gear system which is more complex than normal manual transmission. Also there are many other types of Automatic transmissions are also available like CVT(Continously Variable Transmission)and DSG(Direct Shift Gear).

Advantages of AT

Advantages of automatic transmission is , it is very easy to drive in bumper to bumper traffic because of the creep function (as same as in AMT) and in addition to this feature automatic transmission vehicles at the time of restarting on a hill it doesn’t need to use parking brake for stopping the vehicle from rolling back.

Disadvantages of AT

Disadvantage of automatic transmission is ,

  • The vehicles equipped with automatic transmission will be costlier when compared with the manual version or with the AMT version
  • Automatic vehicles use different types of parts and different type of gear oils so the maintenance cost will be higher
  • Automatic vehicles will be less fuel efficient

Conclusion

If you want to easily drive a car in bumper to bumper traffic with tiredeness you can choose for AT/AMT, but if you like enjoy your drive by changing torque for our own then go for Manual transmission

AT or AMT which one to choose

Both are good but , now adays many of the manufacturers are changing from AT to AMT because they can launch their vehicles at a less cost if it is equipped with AMT than AT. Not only that AMT will have more mileage and less maintenance cost.

Both if you want to drive easily in bumper to bumper traffic but also if you need smooth power transmission then go for AT.
